  • In an article in CNN online today the author, Anthony Balderrama from CareerBuilder.com, writes about hating your job after two weeks. The article describes what you should do when you feel like you’re at the wrong job.

The article mentions asking yourself the following questions:

    1. Can I afford to quit?
    2. Did I do the right research?
    3. Are things as bad as they seem?

This article describes the importance of the process of self-reflection and awareness in job hunting. Finding the right job that is a good fit for you is not a simple process of just going impulsively by gut feeling. Understanding yourself and what you need out of a job and what you expect from a job are crucial to making sure that you will still like the job two weeks later and on.

If you are not happy in your job and cannot afford to quit right now, take this time to learn more about what type of job will make you happy. We are often very good at understanding what jobs we can do—due to our skills, knowledge, and experience—but we often fail when we understanding what jobs we truly want to do. This is because not all jobs we can do and that we will be good at will make us happy. The reverse is true as well. Just because you are happy at a job doesn’t mean you will necessarily do the job well.

Then how do you find a job that you will do well and where you will be happy?

The answer is finding a job that allows you to use your own individual strengths of character. These can include positive traits ranging from humor to optimism to creativity. Thus, it is important to learn about what your signature strengths are in order to find out what type of job or which particular position allows you to use these strengths on a day-to-day basis.

  • The “answer” is finding a way to make your living outside of whatever it is you hate–If you can’t seem to find “meaningful” work in the commonplace, beat your own pathway.
